The tourist south-west: two large beaches, hills with sea views and the most pronounced season on the island.
Kata and neighbouring Karon are the second busiest resort area on Phuket after Patong, though noticeably calmer than it. Two wide beaches, promenades, restaurants and dive centres, with tiny Kata Noi next door — often called one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
Much of the housing stands on the hills, so a sea view is more common here than on the flatter west coast further north. The trade-off is the gradient, and needing transport: walking back uphill from the beach is hard work.
The airport is about an hour away, Bang Tao roughly forty minutes. In return you have the Karon viewpoint, the Big Buddha and the road south to Nai Harn close by.
Who it suits
- Anyone letting to tourists: high-season occupancy here is among the best on the island.
- Anyone who wants a sea view for sensible money — the hills give it more often than the beachfront further north.
- Anyone who likes life around a beach: restaurants, surf in the shoulder season, walkable promenades.
What to keep in mind
- The season swings harder than in Bang Tao: summer demand drops noticeably.
- The terrain. Many developments sit on slopes, and living here without a car or scooter is awkward.
- It is far from the airport — about an hour, which tells if you fly often.
